Activities in brisbane

Visit the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) & QLD Museum at South Bank: https://www.qagoma.qld.gov.au/
 
Visit Museum of Brisbane and Clocktower tour at King George Square (CBD, part of the town hall): https://www.museumofbrisbane.com.au/
 
Wander around South Bank, e.g., Ferris wheel, pool, gardens, cafes, there is an Art and Craft Street Market on the weekends
 
Ride the City Cat (use GoCard or credit card, see Translink: https://translink.com.au/), e.g., St Lucia to New Farm and visit New Farm Park and the Powerhouse (arts centre) 
 
Queen street shopping mall is located on Queen Street in the city centre of Brisbane, you will find all main department, book, IT, pharmacy stores there.
 
Visit the Brisbane City Botanical Garden which is located next to the QUT city campus in the city between river and Alice Street.

Climb the Story Bridge. The story bridge is an iconic bridge which connects Kangaroo Point and New Farm. You can climb the bridge which offers fantastic views: https://storybridgeadventureclimb.com.au/
 
Visit Mount Coot-tha for hiking (gentle) and a beautiful view over the city, use public bus 471 from the city to get there (use GoCard or credit card, see Translink),

Visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary: This is a little zoo of native Australian animals. You can hold Koala and touch Kangaroos. https://lonepinekoalasanctuary.com/
There is the option to take a boat from South Bank (close to State Library) to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary: https://mirimarcruises.com.au/daily-cruises/
 
Visit Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha & Planetarium which is another much larger botanical garden located on the way to Mount Coot-tha (outside the city). A bus will take you there (see Transkink): https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/things-to-see-and-do/council-venues-and-precincts/mt-coot-tha-precinct/getting-to-and-around-the-precinct
 

Destinations a little further away (plan for 1 or 2 days)

North Stradbroke Island: A nice day trip or even weekend trip if you like beaches. Take the train from South Brisbane to Cleveland (use GoCard, check connection on TransLink), there is a bus connecting bus from the Cleveland train station to the passenger ferry terminal, passenger ferry leaves Cleveland every hour (cost ca. $10pp one way), at Dunwich/Straddie there is a public bus stop at the ferry terminal (ca. $10pp), take the bus to Point Lookout, wander around the Point Lookout, e.g., Main Beach, Board walk; Cylinder Beach is also nice.

Moreton Island – Tangalooma Resort: Nice day trip or weekend destination with lots of activities to book: https://www.tangalooma.com/brisbane-day-trip-cruise
 
Visit the Gold Coast: The Gold Coast, e.g., Surfers Paradise, Currumbin, Coolangatta, is the closest to ‘proper’ beaches around Brisbane. You can take the train to Narang/Robina and then the bus to the beach (see Transkink): https://www.destinationgoldcoast.com/
 
Visit Gold Coast Hinterland: Lamington Park or Springbrook National Park for fun outside activities. You will need a car or book a tour: https://www.destinationgoldcoast.com/places-to-go/hinterland-gold-coast
 
Noosa – Located at the Sunshine Coast, nice headland walks and beaches: https://www.visitnoosa.com.au/  Take train to Caboolture or Nambour and then bus to Noosa (see Translink)

Byron Bay – Relaxed and beautiful destination in northern NSW for a long weekend (Greyhound bus connections available, no train from Brisbane): https://byronbay.com/
 
Fraser Island – If you don’t have a car, book a tour: https://www.fraserisland.net/
 
Lady Elliot Island – Southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef is very beautiful with snorkelling/diving opportunities (flights from Brisbane/Sunshine Coast): https://ladyelliot.com.au/ Book well in advance as this is a popular destination. 
 
Cairns – Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Flights from Brisbane to Cairns ( https://www.australia.com/en/places/cairns-and-surrounds/guide-to-cairns.html ) take about 2:30 hours. Webjet can be used for booking flights within Australia: https://www.webjet.com.au/
